Normal Saline (NS) Sodium Chloride Injection IP 0.9% w/v, 100 mL

Normal Saline (NS) Sodium Chloride Injection IP 0.9% w/v, 100 mL

What it does

An IV fluid with the same salt concentration as blood (isotonic). It replaces lost water and salt and expands the fluid outside cells.

Why we need it

- Dehydration (vomiting, diarrhea) - Shock and blood loss - Low sodium - Mixing and diluting IV drugs - Flushing IV lines - Running along with blood transfusion

As a future doctor, what you should know

- Give only as prescribed (dose and rate). - Avoid or be careful in heart failure, kidney failure, edema and high sodium. - Too much causes fluid overload and hyperchloremic acidosis. - Monitor urine output, vitals and serum sodium. - Before use, check expiry, that the bottle is not leaking, and that the fluid is clear.
